Letter To the Editor

"Whose station? Our station!" Shortly before 2:30 pm on June 17, 2026 a massive chemical fire broke out at a cold-storage facility in Boyle Heights.  Desperate Angelenos turned on KPFK---only to hear news from KPFA, Berkeley, where Bay Area weather was cool and sunny with patches off fog. Seven years earlier:  October, 2019.  New Yorkers who tuned into WBAI were astounded to hear, "You're listening to KPFA."  Reps from the Pacifica National [...]

Supreme Court Guts Voting Rights Act

From press reports SCOTUS gutted key provisions of the Voting Rights Act as Change Links went to press. In a 6-3 vote, the high court found a Louisiana Congressional redistricting ordered by a lower court to be unconstitutional as what it termed a "racial gerrymander." The decision, not expected until June, was announced early enough that not only Louisiana but several other Southern states in the former slave-owning Confederacy will have time [...]

Polls show two Republicans and two Democrats vying to be on the November general election ballot. Only the top two candidates [...]

GOP Q-Anon Congressional Candidate Convicted

The LA Times reports that Omar  Navarro, who ran to represent LA's 43rd CD seat held by Maxine Waters in 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2022, has been convicted of electoral fraud and essentially embezzlement, and sentenced to prison. Navarro was a purveyor of Q-Anon conspiracy claims lauding Donald Trump. According to federal prosecutors, as reported by the Times, "From July 2017 to February 2021, he funneled tens of thousands of dollars in [...]

Un-Rig the Elections at Pacifica Radio

Much like the wave of gerrymandering unleashed by DJ Chump on a national level, democracy has been undermined at listener-sponsored, non-commercial educational KPFK 90.7 FM and its non-profit parent Pacifica Foundation, Inc. Pacifica has always been contested terrain, that state security forces have tried to contain or control, the right wing has tried to eliminate, and cold war corporate liberals have sought to dominate and de-radicalize. To protect local autonomy and oversight, [...]

Regarding Newsom’s Proposition 50 on Re-Districting

Proportional Representation Is the Solution to Gerrymandering by Luke Pickrell, DSA Texas Republicans have redrawn their US House map five years early, aiming to flip up to five Democratic seats in next year’s election. The move ignited a nationwide “high-stakes showdown” over gerrymandering, one that now stretches to California’s ballot this November. In response to the Texas GOP’s redistricting push, Democrats from the state traveled to California and Illinois to plan a [...]
