KPFK Local Station Board Elections Underway

by Michael Novick, KPFK LSB Chair The elections for listener and staff delegates at KPFK and other Pacifica stations, no longer threatened by a Bylaws replacement effort that would have eliminated elected local oversight of station management, finances and programming policy and fairness, are now underway. Listener-sponsor and staff members, in separate elections, will choose nine listener and three staff delegates to serve for three years on the Local Station Board (LSB). [Full disclosure: the author is a candidate for re-election to the LSB.] Voting has opened [...]

Victory for Democracy and Diversity at Pacifica

by Michael Novick, Anti-Racist Action LA      The outcome of the recent Bylaws referendum at Pacifica, allowing the Local Station Board elections of listener and staff delegates to go forward, is a victory for democracy, diversity, accountability and a commitment to mission-driven, community-based radio.       The New Day bylaws change, according to the same rules that governed the previous Bylaws referendum, in accordance not just with Pacifica's existing Bylaws, but with the California Corporations Code governing non-profit membership organizations, required the separate approval of two classes of members -- [...]

Mumia Abu-Jamal Speaks Out on Democracy at Pacifica: “Vote NO!” on Bylaws Revision

Given the history of Pacifica, Pacifica you know was founded for a specific purpose and it was to create something that was really quite remarkable in its time, and as we see, in today's time: to resist the corporatization of radio, and to give the freest expression for the people, a kind of radio democracy. And anything that challenges that, of course I and many people who think along those lines, would have to oppose it. So I would say if you're thinking about keeping Pacifica, as [...]

Poetry Corner: Shallow Roots by Michael Novick

Shallow Roots by Michael Novick [excerpts] I have shallow roots in the blood-soaked soil of Turtle Island. My father arrived from Bialystok in the '30s, in his teens. There are no Americans in my genes and my genes are in no Americans. My non-biological grand-daughter was raised in Europe and has become a Swede, married to a Swede, with two lovely Swedish children. I am glad she didn't have to grow up here, steeped in misogyny and corruption. My roots are shallow in this blood-soaked land of [...]

Democracy Hangs in the Balance at KPFK & Pacifica

Dual Elections at KPFK in June Reveal Dueling Futures for Pacifica Radio by Michael Novick, KPFK Local Station Board Chair June 1 opens the regularly scheduled election process for listener and staff delegates to the KPFK Local Station Board (LSB), under the Bylaws that make Pacifica radio a unique democratically governed national media institution. June 7, a separate special costly election process begins on a revision of those Bylaws which, if it passes, would eliminate the election of LSB delegates and take away any power of locally [...]

Which Way KPFK? Neo-Liberal “Professionalism” or Free Speech Community Radio?

Which Way KPFK? by Michael Novick, KPFK Local Station Board chair Listener-sponsored, free-speech community radio for southern California, Pacifica Foundation's KPFK 90.7 FM is currently in the midst of another fund drive. Even more critically, the station and the rest of the Foundation's stations face a fundamental choice, as a Bylaws revision comes up for a membership vote beginning on June 7. (You must have become a member during the year ending April 7 in order to qualify to vote.) The replacement Bylaws would strip any local [...]

Community resistance grows in the nearby suburb of Brooklyn Center in response to the outrageous murder of Daunte Wright. It's critical to speak to local activists on the ground in Minneapolis. We're joined by two guests via zoom. First, [...]

April 7 Deadline to Qualify to Vote – Democracy & Diversity in Danger at KPFK/Pacifica Radio!

April 7 Deadline to Qualify to Vote Democracy & Diversity in Danger at KPFK/Pacifica Radio! by Pacifica Fightback https://pacificafightback.org The folks who illegally shut down Pacifica station WBAI in NYC in 2019, and who were behind the "Pacifica Restructuring Project" (PRP) Bylaws replacement that was roundly rejected by a 2:1 margin by both listener and staff members in March 2020, are back again, calling themselves "New Day Pacifica", with a new plan to rule or ruin Pacifica. For more details, see https://pacificafightback.org. They are trying to use [...]
