Poetry Corner: Lift Every Voice and Sing by James Weldon Johnson

Lift Every Voice and Sing By James Weldon Johnson [Excerpt]   Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us. Facing [...]

Poetry Corner: “Malcolm” by Sonia Sanchez

Malcolm by Sonia Sanchez (Excerpt)   Do not speak to me of martyrdom, of men who die to be remembered on some parish day. I don't believe in dying though, I too shall die. And violets like castanets will echo me.   Reprinted from Hospitality, publication of the Open Door Collective, dedicated to the Black Jesus, which provided food and shelter to poor people in Atlanta and recently relocated to Baltimore as [...]

Poetry Corner: Julian Assange & Mega-Media

JULIAN ASSANGE  AND MEGA MEDIA by Chan Mongol https://www.poemhunter.com/poem/julian-assange-and-mega-media/ We are as same as Julian Assange, in this age; We bring up truths against their lies, days after days.   But Julian Assange is in the prison and we are not; We are unpopular but in their attention, Julian was caught!   Same minded people are all over, everywhere; They picked up one Julian to start another type of war.   Julian got [...]

The ramifications of being Black in the united states by Mariana Franco [Excerpt]   Death Loss of Breath final words "I can't breathe" Death from privileged white tears Death from soulless blue shield devils Black death shadowing over Black lives matter Too many names to say too many names to say Too many names to say the ramification of being Black in the united states is death We got to rise up [...]

Poetry Corner: Shallow Roots by Michael Novick

Shallow Roots by Michael Novick [excerpts] I have shallow roots in the blood-soaked soil of Turtle Island. My father arrived from Bialystok in the '30s, in his teens. There are no Americans in my genes and my genes are in no Americans. My non-biological grand-daughter was raised in Europe and has become a Swede, married to a Swede, with two lovely Swedish children. I am glad she didn't have to grow up [...]

Silence for Gaza by Mahmoud Darwish [excerpt]   Gaza not the most beautiful of cities it is Its shore not bluer than these of other Arab cities they are And its oranges are not the most beautiful on the Mediterranean And Gaza is not the richest of cities And it is not the most progressive among cities But it is equal to a nation's history Because it is the ugliest in the [...]

Poetry Corner: The Legacy by James Connolly

The Legacy by James Connolly "Thy father is a poor man," -- mark well what that may mean, On the tablets of thy memory that truth write bright and clean, The father's lot it was to toil from earliest boyhood on, And know his latent energies for a master's profit drawn. Or else, ill-starred, to wander round and huckster-like to vend His precious store of brain and brawn to all whom fate [...]

Poetry Corner: The Decline of Patriarchy

The Decline of Patriarchy and the Rise of Feminine Energy by Jackie Lopez   The rose above my head has blossomed and says, “Speak your soul to me.”   The patriarchal aliens have left the planet. The oceans are emerging out of the sea. The cosmos is all aglow. And, many a theatre buff is touching the hem of my garment. Cinderella found her shoe and decided to swim with the Mermaids. [...]
